 Wyoming Student Loans

The state of Wyoming is one of the only states in America that offers its students no state aid for college. Instead, students must rely on federal and private loans along with any grants or scholarships they receive to fund their academic career. Here is a brief overview or the different programs available to students.

Federal Pell Grant
The Federal Pell Grant Program offers financial funding to undergraduate students. Eligibility is based on the student’s financial needs and other personal criteria. Students can be awarded up to $4,310 a year based on their financial situation and the number of credit hours they are enrolled for.

Wyoming Federal Stafford Loan Program
A federal loan taken out by the student, a Federal Stafford Loan can be used to pay for costs related to school that are not covered by scholarships and grants. To qualify for a Stafford loan, the student has to be enrolled at least half-time. Repayment of the loan begins six months after the student graduates or leaves college.

Stafford Loans come in two types – subsidized and unsubsidized. Subsidized loans are awarded dependent on the financial need of the borrower. Students enrolled at least half-time are not charged interest if they have a subsidized loan. Interest is also not charged during deferment periods and grace periods. Unsubsidized loans are different in that they do accrue interest. These loans are also not based on financial need and interest is always charged – even during grace periods and deferment periods. Federal Stafford Loans can total more than $20,000 annually based on the borrower’s dependency status and grade level.
