Federal Grants
Federal Grant Opportunities
The U.S. Department of Education expanded its grant program in 2006 after President George W. Bush announced a new student aid program. Today, federal law supports two new grants available to qualifying higher education students. Both grants were founded to help meet the growing demand for improved math and science instruction and can applied for via the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
The Academic Competitiveness GrantAvailable to first and second-year students, the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) provides funding in the range of $750 to $1,300 to students for academic expenses. Successful applicants must qualify for the Federal Pell Grant, be enrolled at an accredited university full-time and hold a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. High school students applying for the grant must complete, to the government’s approval, a predetermined program. Applicants must also have U.S. Citizenship.
The National SMART GrantThe second of the new programs is the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant. This grant supports third and fourth-year undergraduate students. If eligible, recipients can receive up to $4,000 a year to pay for academic expenses. Eligibility requirements demand that students hold U.S. citizenship and are enrolled full-time in school. Students must also meet the Federal Pell Grant qualification requirements. Lastly, undergraduates must be majoring in science, mathematics, technology, engineering or a critical foreign language in which they holed a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. To learn more about these grants and other federal funding for higher education, contact your school’s financial aid office.
According to research, the grants will promote students to take on more challenging courses in high school. Officials believe this will encourage students to continue their education through college. More than $800 million has been set aside on an annual basis to fund the government grants.
